Kingdom of the North: 17th Century Overview by Rarayn Kingdom of the North: 17th Century Overview by Rarayn
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Commentary:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is cartographic fanart for another alternate history timeline I like. The title, as the deviation title suggests, is the "The Kingdom of the North" and involves Hardaknut, son of King Knut the Great, living longer than OTL, and his empire surviving past his death. This map shows the evolved form of this empire, the Kingdom of the North, in the 17th century. (The title came about when one king got sick of listening to the herald reading all his titles and told him to just call him "King of the North")

The map is in Danish with many of the names being influenced by either Danish or Norse. Nothing so great as to be unrecognizeable to our eyes, but enough to give it a sort of foreign feel. (Well, foreign to all you non-Scandinavians out there, anyway)

It's probably not the most plausible timeline around, but it's a very fun and interesting read.

Here's a link to the timeline in question: [link]

Iceland is also part of the Kingdom of the North, it's just not shown here as this map was meant to focus primarily on the European continent.

Ok, but shouldn't Iceland be in a "box" in the corner or something? or maybe mentioned in the commentary?
Btw, this map looks great.

Thanks.

That's not a bad idea, but it's too late at this point. There's no space for a box like that, and making space for one would require me to start over more or less from scratch.

I saw this map and thought it looked interesting. Now that I'm a member of althis.com, I'm off to read up on this Dane-wank. Cheers!
Great map, btw.

The writer of the TL in question has been away for a while, so the TL has kind of slowed to a halt, but what's out already is still good.

The "Kingdom of the North" title has its origins in a king who was tired of listening to all his titles being listed by his heralds, and just told them to shut up and call him "King of the North"

Historically, pretty much all the people (in Europe) claiming the title of Emperor up until around the Napoleonic Wars did so as "successors to Rome", so it wouldn't really be appropriate in the 17th century.

I've always liked Scandinavia (because I have Swedish ancestors, along with lots of Germans), but they never seemed to have a far-reaching empire of great power, like Britain or France or Italy (Rome). But this is great! I know that Sweden was pretty badass in the Thirty Year's War, with the Lion of the North and all, but England was pretty strong too, weren't they? And why would they have gotten Scotland in the mix, I thought many Scottish mercenaries fought for Gustavus Adolphus (because the Scottish sympathized with Sweden, but Scotland seems too rebellious to let themselves be conquered/annexed).

The point of divergence is way back in the 11th century and involves the survival of King Cnut the Great's "North Sea Empire", which included England. Over the centuries, Scotland was conquered and integrated as well. Can't really remember all the details at the moment, as the scenario wasn't mine to begin with and it's been a while since I read it all.

Read the timeline I made this for if you're interested. [link] :)

Oh that's right. Forgot about Cnut. Things kind of fell apart for the Scandinavians when he died.

They are both parts of the Kingdom of the North as well, along with large parts of the North American continent and islands all over the place. It's just that I have a distaste for world maps, and so choose to focus on Europe proper.

Depends what you want to make, I guess. I pretty much only make maps, flags, coat of arms etc. and for that GIMP is pretty great. Inkscape is what you want for max crispness, however. Never figured out how to use that properly though.

Very nice! i'd like to see the surrounding empires, to get an idea of the geopolitics of the kingdom. Also, are Greenland, Iceland, and North America on this empire's list, or are they just focusing on Europe.

You should read the timeline if you are interested, but to summarize:

The main rival of the KoN is the French-Spanish Empire, consisting of France, Spain and Portugal in Europe and following mostly the OTL Spanish colonial routes, with quite a bit of Portugal thrown in.

Then we have the Holy Roman Empire, a sort-of ally of the KoN who has at numerous occasions borrowed money from the KoN for its wars against the the French-Spanish. The KoN also shipped forces down the Rhine to aid the Imperial forces against Ottoman invaders at one point.

Poland likes to raid across the KoN border in wartimes, but is usually quickly beaten back since the KoN can ship troops swiftly over the Baltic Sea.

Russia/Muscovy is the Rising Star of the East, and is as of the latest update on its way to conquer Constaninople from an Ottoman Empire fractured by civil war.

The KoN also has Greenland, Iceland and numerous colonies in OTL Canada and the rest of North America. They've taken over the Dutch, English and much of the French role in colonizing North America, and also have a bunch of colonies in the Caribbean.

They also took a bunch of strategically important isles from Portugal at one point, so they have the Azores and so forth as well.

Game of Thrones is fabulous max, and "King in the North" is surprisingly fitting for the King of the North as well. (Now, how do we get the House of Stark on the throne of the North?)

Glad you liked the map. Can't take credit for the TL though.

Pretty interesting from the sound of it. Though would this be said to be a Norway wank or a Greater Scandinavia wank?
Reply
:iconrarayn:
Rarayn Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2012
Its a Norsewank, really. You could argue that its a Danewank, since King Cnut was a Dane, but the cultural differences between the various people of the KoN have blurred to a point where such distinctions are about as meaningful as the differences between someone living in northern England and someone living in southern England today. You could call it a Greater Scandinavia wank, but England is such an integral part of the kingdom that that's not entirely true either. ^^

No worries, though it seems I forgot the original PoD. It was King Cnuts *son* surviving, not King Cnut himself. Guess I'll have to correct that in the deviation description. Been a while since I started reading this thing. :XD:

:o Awesomeness!

Not sure the Scots would be too fond of that border, though. :p

Where would the best place for the capital be, to avoid accusations of bias towards any particular group?
Reply
:iconrarayn:
Rarayn Featured By Owner Jun 13, 2012
Thanks!

The Scotland-England border is based on the borders as they were at the time of the PoD, so Scotland has Cumbria but not northern Northumbria.

The capital is in Copenhagen (Kaufmannahafn). The PoD is so early that the cultural differences between the core territories of the KoN has blurred long ago, so it's not like there's a strong Swedish national identity that feels oppressed by a Danish monarch or anything. The capital is in Copenhagen more because its an incredibly convenient place to have a capital for an empire centered around the Baltic Sea than anything else.
